Wow! I didn’t count, but there were about fifty or so wooden boats on display. It was pretty impressive-the history, workmanship, attention to detail… It’s a remarkable sight to see.

The Klassy Lady had an exact replica miniature boat that we probably couldn’t afford!

The Top Twenty also has a replica, so don’t disturb those life vests!

The Baby Grandis a day-tripper and includes a cuddy. It’s a great sized boat to cruise around the bay in.

The Lily is perfect with it’s simplicity- clean lines, beautiful workmanship and the lily pads trailing behind add a nice touch.

The generous size and seating capacity of the Tradition makes it a great boat for large parties that can handle the waves on the bay.

The Baby Boomer was built in 1960 and is generously sized as well.

The 1978 Delightfulis a well-preserved craft (and I am partial to the green and white too- Goooo Sparties!)

The Delightful even has the original fire extinguisher mounted in the cockpit. Can a dashboard look any better?

This 1906 relic is in phenomenal condition. It’s especially interesting juxtaposed with the rocket-like finned boat behind it.

The engine was manufactured by Gray Motor Co. out of Detroit, Michigan.

No joke. This boat was built in 1906. Now if only our 100+ year-old house looked that good…

Waterlogged was built in 1948 and has a stunning engine.

The Cora B would make for a great entertainment boat. The built in wine glass holders add a nice touch as well.

Wooden 450 Sq Feet Sustainable Home Has Great Use Of Space, Sweet Details In Buenos Aires

Wooden 450 Sq Feet Sustainable Home Has Great Use Of Space, Sweet Details In Buenos Aires

Photos: Paula Alvarado for TreeHugger.

Small spaces are not new to TreeHugger, and frankly we've seen a lot, from indoor treehouses to tiny camping caravans and everything in between.

But what's surprising about this sustainable home created by Argentine design firm Gruba for this year's Casa FOA architecture and interior design event is that, thanks to clever planning and details, it doesn't feel like a small space at all. With only 450 sq. feet

MyBoatPlans
, the space boasts a full living room and dinning area, kitchen, bathroom, sleeping area, storage space and even a small container herbs farm.

The space is organized by a wooden volume that separates the public and private areas and holds the kitchen and bathroom. It was built with discarded wood recovered from factory scraps.

Behind it, another wooden structure holds storage space and two elevated areas, one for the small farm and the other one for sleeping.

In this structure, water from the kitchen and the bathroom sink is filtered and used to flush the toilet.

Inside of the bathroom, walls are covered with plaques made with recycled bottle caps.

Skipping a proper bedroom to save space (and frankly, because who needs a real bedroom when it's empty two-thirds of the time), the studio came up with this cozy elevated sleeping area.

The thick mat is an interesting proposition to replace a proper mattress, making the area lighter to the eye and also allowing it to be cleared if a party or event demands the use of the whole space.

It's made by Artesano de sueños with natural materials. Organic cotton pillows are filled with seeds.

Occupying more than half the floor area, the living room is what makes the apartment feel big. It has a large table that easily sits ten people and is also a comfortable working space, a lounge area for entertainment, and a modular cardboard shelving space.

Furniture was designed by the studio as well and is no screw no glue, easy to disassemble. It's produced with wood from responsible sources. Stools at the table are covered with tennis balls that courts discard when they are no longer good for matches because they loose pressure.

All lights are LEDs and the whole electrical consumption of the house is only 500 watts.

Casa FOA is an annual design event to gather funds for a local ophthalmologic foundation.

This year it's hosted at the recently opened Metropolitan Design Center, which is located at a 1930s recycled fish market.

Winterize Your Boat

Winterize Your Boat
Winterize Your Boat

Why put time and money into a boat that you're not going to use for six months? That's an all-too-common attitude when it comes to winterizing chores. Beeeg mistake. Winter weather can wreak havoc (cracked blocks, corrosion, etc.) on a boat that's not prepared for hibernation. Another tip: If your boat needs professional help and you wait until spring to get it, you're hitting the boat doctor at his busiest time. So it pays to take care of any problems and dealer-required maintenance in the fall, before your craft is clutched by winter's icy grip.

The Hull Story

Winterizing is more than just sloshing in some fuel stabilizer, draining the engine and adding antifreeze. Consider it to be a methodical process that runs from bow to transom. Because boats and engines differ, start by checking the winterizing/storage sections of your owner's manual.

Fiberglass is made to stand up to the ravages of summer sun and salt water, so a little snow is not a problem - or is it? Ice accumulation can split open hatches and window tracks, causing leaks. So

MyBoatPlans
outside storage demands the proper boat cover. More on this later.

Check the hull, looking for stress cracks (common around the bow eye) and gelcoat blisters. Stress cracks can indicate structural damage, and anything serious should be looked at by a professional. The drill with blisters is to puncture, drain, dry and patch with an epoxy-based filler made for this purpose. If your hull is aluminum, bang the drum slowly with a rubber mallet to knock out dents.

Barnacles and any other unwelcome guests tagging along on your boat bottom should have their free-ride privileges terminated by scraping and then sanding any residue. A good pressure washing is in order to remove dirt and the dreaded sea scum. You'll make this job a lot easier in the future if you apply a product such as 3M's Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax. It creates an acrylic shield over the hull to prevent dirt from penetrating into the wax. The crud stays on the surface where it can be hosed off easily.

Inside Scoop

Winter air can be humid or dry, and both conditions can bring grief to vinyl interiors. Vinyl cleaners and protectants, available in gels and sprays, can prevent your vinyl from drying out and cracking. More insidious is moisture that opens the door to mildew. More than one boat owner has unzipped his boat in the spring only to find the interior looking like a science project with mold and mildew everywhere. The fix here is to vent your boat cover for good airflow to minimize trapped moisture. Mildew sprays are a big help, as are chemical dehumidifiers that pull excess moisture from the air.

When It's Dark, Look For Stars - Among the Young

When It's Dark, Look For Stars - Among the Young
When It's Dark, Look For Stars - Among the Young

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

I have learned a LOT the past six months. I guess a loss will do that to you. A lot about myself, a lot about my family, a lot about people and just life in general. It’s amazing how JUST when you think you’ve got it all figured out, you are stretched in new ways that you never knew possible.

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of tears. Plenty of late nights wondering what God has in

MyBoatPlans
store for me, but I have had the chance to see how very lucky and blessed I truly am.

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

I won’t list them all here, because that would just be silly, and probably kind of preachy. No, I won’t do that. Definitely not. But again, I have noticed all that I have, all that I have been given, and how lucky I am.

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

I have grown so much the past 6 months. I’ve also learned how to trust and appreciate so many family members that I hadn’t before. It’s been an interesting time for me – to be vulnerable? Not “normal” for me. I feel like I’m constantly exposed and raw to the world, and, you know what…that is just ok. It’s ok to be sad, and it’s also ok to see the good through the sad. Call me crazy.

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

Something else I’ve learned? God is good and people are SO good. I have been touched by so many close friends and acquaintances being so thoughtful and genuinely trying to help. It’s been awesome to see the good in the world.

When It's Dark, Look for Stars

I’ve always loved this quote by Marjorie Pay Hinckley, “The only way to get through life is to laugh your way through it. You either have to laugh or cry. I prefer to laugh. Crying gives me a headache.” Because how true is that? It takes so much more energy to be sad and mad than it does to smile or look on the bright side.
